The Dell Studio S1440-022B manages to tip the scales at an impressive 4.7 lbs, a rarity among 14-inch computers, especially ones with the kind of power it brings to the table. Of course, it sacrifices having an optical drive in order to achieve the lightweight body, but makes up for it with plenty of capabilities.
A well-rounded set of components mark the notebook. Specs include a mid-range 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500, a low-end 256MB Nvidia GeForce 9400M, Nvidia MCP79 chipset, 3GB of DDR3 RAM and a 320GB HDD.
On the outside, the Studio S1440 sports a satin finish, along with a plastic chassis with a brushed-aluminum styling. There aren’t too many glossy surfaces, which I appreciate, though some people may not be so inclined. Both the keyboard and the touchpad runs from edge to edge, allowing for plenty of comfort during use.
Display is 14.1 inches and 720p-capable. It features 16:9 aspect ratio, along with 1,366 x 768 native resolution, capably allowing for a high-quality movie viewing experience. Adding to the multimedia capabilities is a pair booming, high-quality speakers integrated in the machine with loud and crisp sound.
Performance isn’t top of the line, but it sure would suffice for most regular notebook requirements. It even manages modest gaming and 3D graphics capabilities. It fits in a great set of ports, including both HDMI and DisplayPort, a combination you’ll seldom find in similar machines in the same range. If you buy the laptop from Best Buy, by the way, you get full licenses for a lot of the bundled software (including MS Office and Norton Internet Security), a great value that’s hard to ignore.
Priced at $749, the Dell Studio S1440-022B offers everything you’d expect from similar mid-range devices, except for an optical drive. With great multimedia playback and a number of forward-looking features, it should prove a great option.
