Hot Mobile Apps Out Of CTIA

By Noel Kuhlman | Apr 5, 2009

yahoomobileAs expected, a number of interesting apps came out of CTIA 2009, while the hardware side of things were pretty uneventful.  While there didn’t seem to be that many stunning moments either, some of the software shown off looked to be really promising, if not entirely welcome additions to our mobile lives.

Social Integration

With the Palm Pre’s Synergy, which integrated various web services in one location, the value of having a single interface for a bunch of social networking functions has been entrenched in many mobile users’ minds.  As such, it was no surprise to find the same idea adopted by various apps during the show.

Yahoo Mobile came up with what is possibly the best integration of often-utilized web services under one screen.  The revamped system, which can be accessed via web browser or a standalone app (iPhone only, for now), offers a customizable home screen where you can have search, RSS feeds, email (not just Yahoo, but other providers as well), social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter and more), contacts and IM.

Communication

3deep came up with a unique concept to let people receive automatic multi-dimensional updates about you, using a varied amount of data sources that you give the app access to.  In a single glance, people can find out where you are right this minute, what you’re planning on doing tomorrow and if you can be scheduled for a meeting two days from now, without having to call you up.  Instead, the app will gather all of that information based on your contacts, email, calendar, social networking updates and GPS signal.

A Few Other Notables

While the above two apps definitely took most of the attention, several other apps were equally as notable.  A couple other highlights include Skydeck and RocketVox’s all-in-one mobile inbox implementations (a la Google Voice) and Emoze’s email compressing device (for faster transmissions).
