It’s MWC 2009: Let The Next Generation Of iPhone Killers Make Their Pitch

By Noel Kuhlman | Feb 19, 2009

Mobile World Congress 2009 has been ongoing in Barcelona since the beginning of the week and, as expected, we’re hearing the phrase “iPhone Killer” occasionally dispensed in liberal amounts.  With Apple’s brilliantly-designed handset still setting the bar, can we really hope for one of these mobile devices to take the competition to the next level?

Android G2

1Now known as the HTC Magic, the new Android phone ditches the keypad, cleans up its form and slaps Google’s exciting OS in a slim and sleek full-touch package.  Devoid of a physical keyboard, HTC designed a whole new way of entering text that everyone who’s tried it agree will make you appreciate the iPhone’s virtual keyboard all the more – it just didn’t work as your engineers expected, HTC.

While most agree an Android phone will likely be the iPhone’s biggest bane to date, I doubt it’s going to be in this iteration for HTC.

Nokia N86

2The world’s premiere handset manufacturer has always fallen short of their lofty ideals and they seem to continue to do so with their new flagship device.  Despite their best efforts to pimp the N86, it’s still just a bulky Nokia handset with a very good camera module.  At least, you’re still number one.

Samsung OmniaHD

3This one, you buy for the hardware.  With an 8 megapixel camera module, 3.7 inch AMOLED screen (that everyone’s saying is the best screen you’re going to see on a phone today, bar none), 720p recording and decoding (yep, that’s true HD video right there) and possibly the best stereo speakers on a mobile handset, the OmniaHD is pure gorgeousness plagued by a sub-par touch software.  iPhone killer?  No.  Jesus Christ, what crazy specs? Yes.

The Real iPhone Killer

4MWC 2009 didn’t fail us, though.  The real iPhone killer unveiled itself during the show and let me say it’s glorious.

Dubbed the Hyundai MB400, it’s a phone hidden inside an iPod’s body and it left everyone scratching their heads.  “Ridiculously ridiculous” are the only words that I manage to utter at its sight.
