lenovos20 Lenovo ThinkStation S20: Xeon Processors, Highly ConfigurableThe Lenovo ThinkStation S20 follows well into the desktop tradition began by IBM, with a tool-free sturdy PC case and a neat internal layout.  It fits in a powerful set of specs, along with superbly quiet operation and some green credentials (Energy Star rating and 50% recycled plastic).

It comes with an option of Intel Xeon processors (dual-core and quad-core CPUs), along with up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM.  On the highest end, you can specify a 3.2GHz Xeon W5580, to go with.  For graphics cards, you can opt for up to two dual-display units on the high end, with both a Nvidia Quadro and an ATI Firepro both available.

In terms of performance, the ThinkStation S20 should work well enough for your requirements, depending on the hardware you fit in.  Since it’s decked out neatly and very organized, it’s easy to upgrade individual parts as well.   The motherboard supports Level 0,1 and 5 RAID setups, but can only fit in up to three SATA drives (with a maximum 50GB each), which is pretty limited.   Chances are that, for high-performance use, you’ll be looking towards equipping it with a plug-in adapter for backup options.

For connections, you get an eSATA port, eight USB connectors, gigabit ethernet, a 20-in-1 card reader and a complete set of analog and audio slots.  The Lenovo ThinkStation S20 comes with either XP or Vista, with minimal bloatware – only a trial of Office 2007, backup and security applications are preloaded.  Price is pretty competitive against similar workstations.
