For a one-time payment of $100, Pogoplug lets you share any USB hard disk over the web using nothing but a palm-sized brick with one USB port, one ethernet port and a power connection. You plug the hard disk into the box, connect it to your broadband line, plug it to a power outlet and that’s it – you can access your home storage anywhere in the world.
Unlike similar solutions which require you to use an extra computer to keep the files available 24/7, the small Pogoplug box is really all you need. If you have multiple hard drives to share, you can just plug in a USB hub and slot your drives in there.
Setup is indescribably easy that even the most tech-challenged people you know can use it. Price is even sweeter – there’s no recurring subscription whatsoever for continued use of their online facilities. If that sounds like a bad way of doing business, tell Pogoplug, all while taking full advantage of it as long as you can!
Each Pogoplug device will be tied to one account on the company’s website. You can login to the account just like any web service and use the interface to access files on your remote storage. Other folks you want to share the storage can be given temporary accounts that you define yourself using their email address. It’s a better and cheaper alternative to using file sharing sites, saving you a whole lot of uploading time in the process.
Apart from browser access, there are downloadable apps for both Mac and Windows that allows you to add the shared hard disk as a network drive, letting you use it much like any local storage. There’s an iPhone app too that allows you to stream music, JPG and documents from the Pogoplug to your iPhone either via Wi-Fi or 3G.
Simply put, the Pogoplug is an incredible device sold at an incredible value. I doubt it will stay this cheap for very long so you better get one while you can!
