Racing Like A Madman: Burn Out Paradise, The Ultimate Box Review

By | Feb 22, 2009

It’s fair to say that the Burnout series went down in brilliance after the groundbreaking Burnout Revenge title from way back, cranking out pretty disappointing follow-ups in its wake.  It did, however, seem to return to old form with the release of Burnout Paradise on consoles last year and now, PC gamers can partake in the fun mayhem with  Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box.

One of the most entertaining driving games to ever come out, Burnout Paradise takes you on a wild tour of Paradise City, putting you up against various challenges that include normal races, Stunt Run (where the goal is to put together drifts, jumps, and boosts in succession), Marked Man (where opponents work to smash your car up as you make your way to the finish), Road Rage (the classic game mode where you destroy opponents in the most creative and damaging ways), Showtime (where you inflict as expensive a damage as you can in one fell swoop) and Burning Route (time trials). You can explore (and render destruction across) the open world at your leisure, working through the single player mode to unlock the full range of 70+ vehicles available in the game.

The Ultimate Box comes with the lot of downloadable add-ons that have been released for the title on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, including the Bikes pack (yep, you can race motorcycles now) and the popular Burnout Party, a unique offline group mode that allows for up to 8 players.  A total of 490 one-shot and multi-part challenges are available in the game (which can vary depending on how many players are participating) – a massive amount that means tons of exciting options available to racers.  The online multiplayer challenges are particularly compelling and varied, adding a really new dimension you can’t enjoy in offline play.

Visually, the PC release does the console version even better, making the game a serious visual feast, although the unexciting soundtrack still leaves much to be desired  (play your own MP3s because the tunes in this game suck eggs).  While the PC has played host to a number of amazing racing titles, gamers will be hard-pressed to find a driving game that delivers as much enjoyable insanity as Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box.
