The first Transformers movie’s game tie-in from Traveller’s Tales was a disappointing mess. That’s why for the second movie, Activision handed development duties to LuxoFlux to mixed results.
Just like you expect from a Michael Bay movie, the game version of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has a retardedly weak story, with some pretty illogical progression. The missions, for the most part, feel like a requisite running around as you try to extend the gameplay before saving your favorite human buddy.
Now, on to the good part. LuxoFlux made a damned good job creating the robots for this game, ably recreating the ominous and polished creatures that appear in the movie. I can literally look at the robots in the game all day and I might as well when playing the game because the environment was nothing but a big mess. For some reason, the developer decided that everything else other than the robots was an aside graphically and proceeded to treat them that way.
Since I have no real basis on which to gauge robot-on-robot combat, I don’t know how realistic the fighting is. Regardless, this game provides the most enjoyable robot battles I’ve ever played on a gaming console – all those firepower and ranged abilities are put to good use. As such, going up against opponents in massive multiplayer mode is a hell of a good time and is the real reason you want to buy this game, given the pathetic single player campaign.
If you want to engage in robot battles online, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has a huge community of gamers with one of the best heavy metal combat facility I’ve ever seen on a game. If you’re looking for a story and realism, though, this is not the game for you (in that case, nor are transforming robots actually).
