Wacom took four long years before updating their professional-grade Intuos graphics tablet and it’s more than a welcome change. The newly-unveiled Intuos4 comes in four different models, each one with a different size: small (A6), medium (A5), large (A4) and extra large (A3).
Stylus is slightly shorter than the one from the Intuos3, but overall use feels significantly upgraded. Sensitivity for the new Grip Pen has been doubled from its previous iteration, making drawing and writing by hand feel incredibly natural. It comes with ten spare nibs, each of which make specific drawing tasks a much easier proposition.
The Intuos4 comes in an attractive black finish coupled with a slim, slightly-curved shape on the top and bottom ends. The programmable ExpressKeys have been moved to the left hand side of the table area, with the Touch Strip replaced by a ring-shaped clickwheel-type control.
As with the Intuos3, you can assign a keyboard combination and program function for each ExpressKey (different settings can be made for each application). To make sure you don’t forget what a button is supposed to do, the Intuos4 comes with individual OLED labels next to each key, creating excellent customization possibilities. All settings can be made from the Wacom Control Panel. Do note that the OLED displays are only available for models medium and higher.
Overall, the Intuos4 is a great graphic tablet, with updates that are both fun and extremely useful. Like all Wacom tablets, you can also rest assured that it comes with the same sturdy build and long-lasting quality that ensures your input device will last a long time. For professional graphic designers, the convenience this gadget can bring should more than make up for the steep price.
